1870 Proof Dollar Pattern - J-1024
Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
An aluminum striking from the regular 1870 gold dollar dies, J-1024 reduces the already diminutive gold dollar to its most ethereal form. The Indian Princess obverse — James B. Longacre's distinctive Type III design featuring Liberty wearing a feathered headdress — and wreath reverse appear in startling contrast to their usual gold presentation. An aluminum gold dollar would have been nearly weightless, a quality that paradoxically draws attention to the exquisite miniature engraving that production gold dollars often had too small and too heavy for casual examination.
