Description
Bridging the dollar and gold denominations, J-1023 was struck in copper from the regular 1870 gold dollar dies, creating a copper impression of the smallest gold coin in American commerce. The gold dollar's tiny planchet — barely larger than a modern dime — presented unique challenges for off-metal strikings, as copper's different flow characteristics could produce varying levels of detail compared to the gold for which the dies were designed. This piece documents the beginning of the gold denomination section within the 1870 pattern program, where the Mint explored alternative compositions for every circulating gold coin.
