Description
Using the regular production Seated Liberty dies for the 1870 dollar, J-1020 was struck in copper with a reeded edge, effectively creating a copper impression of the year's circulating silver dollar. Unlike the experimental Liberty Head and STANDARD reverse patterns, this piece employed the exact same dies used for production coins, making it a transitional piece between the pattern program and regular coinage. Copper impressions from regular dies were commonly produced at the Philadelphia Mint for collectors and the Mint Cabinet, blurring the line between patterns and off-metal strikings of production coins.
