1867 Proof Cent Pattern - J-553
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
The final Judd-cataloged cent pattern for 1867, this proof specimen represents the last in a short series of four cent varieties produced that year. While the broader 1867 pattern series focused heavily on nickel five-cent experimentation, the cent patterns served as a parallel confirmation that the IN GOD WE TRUST mandate could be seamlessly incorporated across all denominations. Longacre's Indian Head design had become one of the most recognizable American coin motifs by this date, and its adaptation to include the national motto required only modest adjustments to the reverse die. This piece was struck with the full proof treatment including polished planchets and dies.
