Description
The third proof cent pattern variety cataloged for 1867, this piece features a distinguishing characteristic in either composition, die state, or design detail that separates it from J-550 and J-551. By 1867, the Mint was well established in its pattern-making protocols, with Superintendent James Pollock overseeing a systematic approach to experimental coinage. These cent patterns were among the less urgent of the Reconstruction-era experiments since the Indian Head cent's compact design presented fewer challenges for motto integration than the larger denominations. Nevertheless, multiple die varieties were prepared and struck in proof format, reflecting the thoroughness of the Mint's approach to even routine design modifications.
