Description

This proof cent pattern from 1867 continues the IN GOD WE TRUST integration program begun the previous year for the Indian Head cent. Chief Engraver James B. Longacre prepared these experimental dies in what proved to be his final full year of active service at the Philadelphia Mint. The obverse retains the familiar Indian Head portrait with its feathered headdress, while the reverse features the oak wreath and shield arrangement with the motto. By 1867, the motto had already been successfully added to higher denominations including the two-cent piece, nickel, and silver coins, making the cent pattern program more of a formality confirming the design adaptation. Struck on a standard bronze planchet in the careful proof format reserved for presentation and specimen pieces.
