Description

A proof striking of the 1867 Indian Head cent pattern featuring IN GOD WE TRUST on the reverse. Judd-551 represents a die variety distinguishable from J-550 through minor differences in letter positioning or die characteristics. These cent patterns were produced during a period when Longacre's health was declining, and much of the day-to-day die preparation was being handled by assistant engraver William Barber. The obverse displays the Indian Head design that had proven immensely popular since its 1859 introduction, retaining its symbolic representation of Liberty rather than an actual Native American. The reverse wreath and shield framework accommodates the motto text without sacrificing the clarity of the ONE CENT denomination.
