Description

Judd-424, Pollock-497, is the second 1865 proof quarter motto pattern. This variety presents an alternative arrangement for the With Motto quarter design. The six-variety 1865 quarter series doubled the three-variety 1863 program, indicating that the quarter denomination required significant additional work before the design could be finalized. The need for balance between the motto text and the heraldic eagle on the quarter's moderate-sized reverse was the primary challenge.
