Description
The 1864 Two Cent Piece - Large Motto is a cent produced at the Philadelphia Mint as part of the Two Cent Pieces 1864-1873 series. The U.S. Mint produced 19.8 million examples, making this the lower-mintage of the two mint variants. The obverse features a shield with a banner inscribed IN GOD WE TRUST — the first U.S. coin to bear this motto and the reverse displays a wreath enclosing 2 CENTS. First year of the denomination and the first U.S. coin to bear IN GOD WE TRUST. The Small Motto variety, with thinner lettering, was produced in limited quantities before the bolder Large Motto replaced it. The Small Motto is the key to the series. Struck at the original U.S. Mint facility, in continuous operation since 1792. Estimated market value ranges from $25 to $217 depending on grade and condition. Struck in bronze, weighing 6.22 grams, 23 mm in diameter, with a plain edge. Cataloged as PCGS #3576.
