Description
The 1864 Two Cent Piece - Large Motto is a cent produced at the Philadelphia Mint as part of the Two Cent Pieces 1864-1873 series. Total mintage reached 19.8 million. The obverse features a shield with a banner inscribed IN GOD WE TRUST โ the first U.S. coin to bear this motto, while the reverse displays a wreath enclosing 2 CENTS. Designed by James Barton Longacre. Struck in bronze, weighing 6.22 grams, 23 mm in diameter, with a plain edge. Cataloged as PCGS #3576. The Two-Cent Piece, introduced in 1864, holds the distinction of being the first U.S. The 1864 Small Motto variety is the key to the series. Later dates had declining mintages and the final years (1871-1873) are proof-only.
