Description

Struck during the brief three-year run of the Flying Eagle Cent (1856-1858), WDDO-009 documents a Class I clockwise-spread doubled die obverse on the 1857 issue — one of only 17.45 million struck that year at Philadelphia. The clockwise rotational hub doubling is visible on USA, the eagle's beak, and the eagle's eye, with the spread creating displaced secondary impressions of these design elements. This variety also carries a repunched date (RPD): the 57 shows strong repunching to the south, while the 1 displays slight repunching to the north, adding a second attribution layer to an already significant die. No reverse die markers have been identified. The cross-reference trail is extensive — Snow S10, CONECA DDO-006, Cherrypickers FS-01-1857-103, Flynn DDO-009, F.IND.ERS FND-007, and Wexler 1857 1c WDDO-009 — reflecting wide recognition across multiple attribution services. Class I doubling results from rotated hub impressions during die manufacture, producing the clockwise spread pattern. Attributed by the Wexler Team, this doubled die on a short-lived pre-Civil War small cent design carries particular appeal for collectors pursuing early U.S. Mint die varieties.
