1857 Flying Eagle Cent - Mule Die Clash MUDC-1C-1857-02
Error
Description
MUDC-1c-1857-02 is a mule die clash on an 1857 Flying Eagle cent, cataloged by Mad Die Clashes: the cent's obverse die clashed with the obverse die of an 1857 Seated Liberty half dollar. MDC pictures both obverses and the clash position; because two obverse dies met, the half dollar die is shown flipped but not inverted. MDC gives AMERICA as the PUP for this clash on the cent. Liberty's left arm cuts across AMERICA and runs down to the tail of the eagle, and her right arm left a clear mark passing through the word. That mark was once taken for a retained die break, until it was recognized as a clash. More marks lie around the head and left wing of the eagle: the upper one from Liberty's left arm, the middle and lower ones from the drapery she sits on. MDC adds that the mark shows even on Flying Eagle cents graded AG-3. Rick Snow supplied the overlay image.
