1857 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-008

Description

The 1857 Flying Eagle Cent belongs to one of the shortest series in American coinage — struck only from 1856 through 1858 as the nation's first small-format cent. WDDO-008 is a Class I clockwise spread doubled die obverse, with displacement visible on USA, the eagle's beak, and the eagle's eye. This obverse die is also a repunched date: the 57 is repunched strongly to the south and the 1 is repunched slightly to the north, giving collectors two distinct attributable anomalies on a single die. Flying Eagle Cents were struck in an 88% copper, 12% nickel alloy soon abandoned due to striking difficulties.
