1857 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-003
Error
Description
Assigned Wexler Variety ID 1857 1¢ WDDO-003 and cross-referenced as Snow S21, CONECA DDO-012, and Flynn DDO-003, this 1857 Flying Eagle cent exhibits Class I clockwise hub doubling. The spread is visible on USA, the eagle's beak, eye, neck feathers, and talons on the obverse, where the secondary hub impression rotated clockwise relative to the primary. Obverse die markers include die failure above the D of UNITED and around the first S of STATES, a die scratch from the right side of the second A of AMERICA running northeast to the rim, a die scratch running southeast from the rim above the I of AMERICA, and a short die gouge running southeast from the rim above the upper left of the D in UNITED. A short die gouge also rises north from the upper right O in OF. On the reverse, a die crack runs from the upper left middle leaf north to the rim, and another extends from the bottom right leaf southeast to the rim. The 1857 Flying Eagle cent was the first small-format cent produced for circulation, and doubled die varieties from this transitional issue carry particular significance among early small cent specialists. Reverse: None noted.Submitted By: William R.
