1857 Flying Eagle Cent - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001

Description

1857 WDDO-001 is a doubled die obverse on the 1857 Flying Eagle cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. A strong Class I spread in the clockwise (CW) direction shows on USA and across the eagle: on its head (beak, eye and head feathers), its left wing and tail, and its leg and talons. On the obverse, east of the top of the 7 in the date, two strong scratches run side by side; a heavy gouge rises north from the top end of the E's middle crossbar in STATES; and the die surface is rough around the TAT of STATES. On the reverse, a crack crosses the upper left leaves from SW to NE. Sam Lukes submitted the variety. Snow numbers it S3 and CONECA DDO-008; in Cherrypickers it is FS-01-1857-105. Flynn lists it as DDO-001, the F.IND.ERS Report as FND-004, and Breen as #1928.
