Description

A 1795 Washington Liberty & Security halfpenny with an edge inscription reading ASYLUM FOR THE OPPRESSED. This edge legend is a reference to America as a refuge for the persecuted, reflecting the ideals of the new nation. The obverse shows Washington's bust with LIBERTY AND SECURITY legend, and the reverse features a heraldic eagle. The Asylum edge is the rarest edge variety in this series.
