Description
A die clash is visible on the obverse of this 1793 Chain cent of the AMERI. variety. A die clash occurs when the obverse and reverse dies strike each other without a planchet between them, transferring elements of each die's design onto the opposing die. On this example, letters from the reverse legend are clashed around the neck of Liberty on the obverse. The 1793 Chain cent was the first large cent produced by the United States Mint, and die clashes on this extremely early issue reflect the challenges of the Mint's inaugural year of production.
