About This Coin

The 1793 Flowing Hair Chain Cent is a United States cent from the Flowing Hair Chain Cents 1793 series. The obverse features Liberty facing right with flowing hair, surrounded by stars, while the reverse displays a chain of 15 links representing the states of the Union. Designed by Attributed to Henry Voight. Struck in copper, weighing 13.48 grams, 27 mm in diameter, with a bars and vines edge. Produced at the Philadelphia Mint. The 1793 Chain Cent was the first coin struck for general circulation at the newly established Philadelphia Mint. The chain reverse was immediately criticized for suggesting slavery and was quickly replaced. Among the most historically significant U.S. coins. Even well-worn examples command substantial premiums.
