Description
This 1785 Immune Columbia piece is struck in gold. These pieces pair the eye-and-stars obverse of the Nova Constellatio coppers with Liberty seated, holding scales, and IMMUNE COLUMBIA 1785. Crosby lists them in gold, silver and copper and thought the dies probably cut by Thomas Wyon of Birmingham; no record says what they were struck for. Crosby reports the only gold example in the Mint cabinet at Philadelphia, weighing 128.8 grains and struck over a guinea whose legend still shows. PCGS number 834.
