Description

Cataloged in Crosby's pioneering reference on early American coins and listed as Whitman 5630, the 1785 Immune Columbia copper pattern with blunt rays is one of the most important experimental coinage designs of the Confederation period. The reverse features a radiant sun with blunt or rounded ray tips emanating from a central eye of providence, surrounded by the legend IMMUNE COLUMBIA (Latin for "Columbia is free" or "America is immune"), expressing the young nation's newly won sovereignty. The blunt rays are distinguished from the pointed rays variety by their rounded terminals, a die-cutting detail that separates the two major reverse types in the 1785 Immune Columbia series. The obverse varies among Immune Columbia pieces — some pair with George III portrait dies, Liberty seated designs, or other experimental types — reflecting the speculative nature of these patterns, which were produced by private manufacturers hoping to secure government coinage contracts during the period when no federal mint existed. Extremely rare, this blunt rays copper is one of the major varieties in the 1785 Immune Columbia pattern series and represents the intersection of political aspiration and commercial enterprise that characterized American coinage production before the establishment of the United States Mint in 1792. The Crosby catalog, published in 1875, remains the foundational reference for classifying these early American copper patterns.
