Description
This 1785 piece pairs a VERMON AUCTORI head with the IMMUNE COLUMBIA reverse. These pieces pair the eye-and-stars obverse of the Nova Constellatio coppers with Liberty seated, holding scales, and IMMUNE COLUMBIA 1785. Crosby lists them in gold, silver and copper and thought the dies probably cut by Thomas Wyon of Birmingham; no record says what they were struck for. Crosby thought the head die probably cut by James F. Atlee, who worked at Machin's Mills and found the pairing only in copper. PCGS number 838.
