Description
This is the 1776 Continental Currency piece with the legend spelled CURENCY, listed by NGC in copper. No act authorizing a dollar coin has been found, but Eric Newman showed that Congress printed no $1 notes from July 1776 to September 1778, which points to a coin planned in their place. The pieces show a sundial under the sun with FUGIO and MIND YOUR BUSINESS inside the legend CONTINENTAL CURRENCY 1776, and thirteen linked rings bearing the names of the states around AMERICAN CONGRESS and WE ARE ONE. Most were struck in pewter, a few in brass and silver, with an edge of twin olive leaves; Newman credited Elisha Gallaudet with the dies, and an article in The Numismatist of January 2018 argued instead that they were souvenir tokens made in Britain.
