Would You Use an AI Chatbot for Coin Identification & Research?
OpenWe're exploring adding an AI-powered chatbot to NumisDex that would have full access to our catalog of 72,000+ listings. The goal would be to help you quickly find answers without having to dig through search results or browse the hierarchy manually.
What could it do?
- Identify varieties and errors: Describe what you see on your coin and get matched to known varieties. "I have a 1955 Lincoln cent and the date looks doubled — what could this be?"
- Answer catalog questions: "What mint marks exist for the 1916 Mercury Dime?" or "How many known VAM varieties are there for the 1881-S Morgan Dollar?"
- Compare similar listings: "What's the difference between a DDO-001 and DDO-002 on the 1972 Lincoln Cent?"
- Explain error types: "What causes a die clash?" or "What's the difference between a repunched mint mark and an over mint mark?"
- Value guidance: "What's the estimated value range for a 1937-D 3-Legged Buffalo Nickel?"
What it wouldn't replace: Expert attribution, community vetting, and human verification would remain at the core of NumisDex. The chatbot would be a research assistant, not an authority.
