A typical die clash occurs when the obverse and reverse dies come together during the striking cycle without a planchet between them, causing elements of each die's design to be impressed into the opposing die face. The resulting coins show faint incuse traces of the opposite side's design — obverse features ghosting on the reverse, and vice versa — in areas where the die fields made contact. Great Basin National Park in Nevada was one of five parks featured on 2013 quarters in the America the Beautiful program, which ran from 2010 through 2021. The quarter's reverse depicts the bristlecone pine set against the Wheeler Peak backdrop, a design by Ronald D. Sanders that showcases one of the oldest living organisms on Earth.
