Description

Cataloged by MadDieClashes as TDC-25C-2004-01IA, this 2004 Iowa State Quarter preserves a typical die clash — the result of obverse and reverse dies striking each other without a planchet between them, transferring design elements as incuse impressions on the opposing die. The Iowa quarter's reverse, designed by John Mercanti, depicts Grant Wood's famous painting "Arbor Day" showing a schoolhouse, teacher, and students planting a tree — a scene adapted from one of America's most celebrated regionalist artworks. Die clashes on State Quarters are collected within the fifty-state series framework, where each state's unique reverse creates distinct clash transfer patterns. When the press cycled empty, raised elements from Mercanti's Iowa scene transferred onto the Washington obverse die and vice versa, producing ghost-like impressions on subsequently struck coins. Struck on copper-nickel clad planchets at 24.3mm as part of the 50 State Quarters Program (1999-2008), which revitalized public interest in coin collecting. Examine both sides for transferred design elements — ghost impressions from the opposing die face.
