About This Coin
Washington medals bearing the abbreviated legend REPUB. AMERI. (Republic of America) on the reverse. Two varieties are known: a 1796-dated bronze medal (cataloged as GW-61) and an undated piece typically attributed to around 1800 that adds BORN VIRGINIA to the inscription. Both feature a bust of Washington on the obverse. These medals reflect the patriotic reverence for Washington during the early republic and are collected as part of the broader Washington Pieces series for their historical inscriptions and early federal symbolism.
