Description

A cent-sized token cataloged as Musante GW-110, known as the Washington Double Head cent with engrailed (scalloped) edge, produced circa 1820. This distinctive token features a portrait of Washington on both the obverse and reverse, making it a true "double-headed" piece — a format that is unique among Washington numismatic items. The two portraits may show Washington facing in different directions or at different ages, creating a medallic conversation between two images of the same subject. The engrailed edge, featuring a pattern of small scallops or indentations around the rim, distinguishes this variety from the plain edge version and indicates more sophisticated production equipment. The circa 1820 dating places this token in the post-War of 1812 period when American nationalism surged and Washington commemoratives remained popular commercial products. These were produced in England or by an American token manufacturer for sale as patriotic keepsakes. Copper, approximately 28-29mm diameter, cent-weight.

Rarity Notes

Scarce. The engrailed edge variety is less common than the plain edge version and is a key variety for Washington token collectors.
