1999 Type I Counter Clash CCL(T1)-10c-1999-02

Description

Among the rarest error types in modern coinage, this Type I counter clash on the 1999-P Roosevelt Dime occurs when an already-struck coin is accidentally fed back between the dies, impressing its design in incuse onto the die faces. Subsequent coins struck by those dies then display ghost-like traces of the transferred design elements. CCL(T1)-10c-1999-02 shows partial RIC from AMERICA appearing on the reverse, with a possible olive tree leaf counter clash that remains inconclusive. Both sides exhibit well-defined clash marks from two separate clashed die events, indicating the dies collided without a planchet at least twice before the counter clash was transferred. Counter clashes are fundamentally different from standard die clashes — a die clash occurs when empty dies strike each other, while a counter clash requires a previously struck coin to serve as the intermediary, transferring its own design back onto a die surface. The combination of two distinct clash events and the counter clash makes this a multi-error specimen. Discovered by Sean Wilson.
