Struck in gold circa 1859 as the first reissue of the celebrated Sansom Medal, this piece (GW-59, Baker 72A, Musante GW-59) ranks among the rarest and most valuable Washington medals. Originally designed by Robert Scot, the first Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint, in 1805, the medal depicts Washington on the obverse and the Sansom Street building in Philadelphia on the reverse — commemorating the lot where the Mint's first facility had stood. Gold strikings are extraordinarily rare; most examples across all die states were produced in bronze or copper. This precious metal version was struck as a special presentation or collector piece.
