Description

A bronze (AE) first reissue of the Sansom Medal (GW-59), produced circa 1859. This reissue was struck from the original Sansom dies after the initial 1806-07 production. The first reissue is distinguishable from the original by its die state showing additional wear and from later restrikes by less deterioration. The Sansom Medal design by Joseph Sansom remains one of the most artistic Washington medallic portraits.

Rarity Notes

Scarce. First reissues are less common than later restrikes.
