2025 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-027
ErrorDescription
Identified by Brian A. Ribar and cataloged as 2025-P WDDR-027, this Class VIII tilted hub doubling on the current-year Jefferson Nickel targets specific architectural features of the Monticello facade. The doubling manifests on the lower portion of the large semicircular window and on the top of column number 3, where the tilted hub's secondary impression shifted geometric elements that provide high-contrast diagnostic reference points. Class VIII doubling results from a tilted hub — the hub face contacts the die at a slight angle during the secondary impression, producing spread that varies in magnitude across the die face depending on distance from the tilt axis. The Monticello facade's columns, windows, and pediment are particularly effective at revealing tilted hub events because their straight lines and circular arcs deviate visibly from true when a secondary image introduces competing geometry. Obverse die markers include die gouges below GO of GOD, while the reverse carries multiple diagnostics: a die gouge above the first O of MONTICELLO, another between TI of MONTICELLO, a die gouge between the two left windows, and a die break depression on the left edge of the building. The die break depression is especially notable — it indicates the die has developed a localized collapse that goes beyond surface gouging into structural deformation, suggesting this die accumulated significant stress during its service life. As a 2025-P issue, this variety represents current Philadelphia Mint production of the Return to Monticello design that has served since 2006, and the 27th DDR catalog position indicates an active variety-discovery community monitoring modern nickel production.
