Description

WDDO-001 is a doubled die obverse on the 2025 Jefferson nickel. Classified as Class VIII Tilted Hub Doubling, the variety exhibits doubling on both of Jefferson's eyelids and his nose — facial features on Jamie Franki's forward-facing portrait, in use since 2006. Class VIII tilted hub doubling occurs when the working hub tilts rather than pivoting or rotating during the secondary impression, creating a distinctive pattern where the displacement varies across the die face in a manner different from standard rotational misalignment. The reverse die carries a die gouge to the left of the F in FIVE, providing a secondary diagnostic for confirming the correct die marriage, while no significant obverse markers were noted beyond the doubled die characteristic itself. The eyelid and nose doubling on the forward-facing portrait is easy to spot on the face. Modern Mint production technology has reduced but not eliminated hub doubling events, making documented DDOs on recent dates relatively uncommon compared to the mid-twentieth century when hub alignment relied more heavily on manual processes. The Return to Monticello series continues Jefferson nickel production with updated portrait and reverse designs that maintain the Monticello imagery.

Die Markers
