Description

Documented by Brian A. Ribar and cataloged as Wexler Variety ID 2025-P WDDR-015, this fifteenth doubled die reverse for the 2025 Philadelphia-mint Jefferson Nickel showcases Class VIII (Tilted Hub Doubling) presenting as very nice doubling on both the left and right inside portions of the large semicircular window on Monticello's facade. The bilateral visibility — appearing on both sides of the same architectural window — is diagnostically significant because it establishes the tilt axis orientation: the hub tilted along an axis that bisected the window, causing displacement in opposite directions on each side of that axis. Die markers for the reverse include a die gouge between the lower portions of the long and small right windows, a die gouge between EL of MONTICELLO, and a die scratch through US of PLURIBUS. No obverse die markers have been noted. The 2025-P Jefferson Nickel represents the most recent production year in the Return to Monticello series, continuing Jamie Franki's forward-facing Jefferson portrait on the obverse with the Monticello building on the reverse. Struck in copper-nickel composition at 5.0 grams and 21.2 mm diameter, the 2025 issue demonstrates that hub doubling events remain a regular feature of modern die manufacturing. Fifteen documented DDR varieties for the 2025-P nickel in its first year confirms the ongoing productivity of variety attributors surveying new releases for collectible hub doubling anomalies.
