Description

Brian A. Ribar attributed this contemporary Jefferson Nickel variety, cataloged as Wexler 2025-P WDDR-014, documenting Class VIII tilted hub doubling with particularly attractive expression on the large semicircular window of the Monticello building — described as "very nice," a qualitative assessment that suggests the doubling is readily visible under standard magnification and produces an aesthetically appealing effect on one of the reverse design's most prominent architectural features. The semicircular window (the Palladian-inspired fanlight above Monticello's entrance) is a broad, curved design element whose arc provides an excellent reference geometry against which the distortion-based spread of Class VIII doubling creates a clearly perceptible shadow line or thickened contour. The reverse die marker set is robust with four distinct gouges: one above the C of MONTICELLO, one to the upper right of the M of MONTICELLO, one to the right of the last O of MONTICELLO, and one in the right portion of the M of AMERICA. The concentration of three gouges around MONTICELLO — each at a different position relative to a different letter — creates a spatially distributed verification pattern that is virtually impossible to confuse with die markers from other 2025-P reverse dies. No significant obverse die markers were noted, placing full attribution weight on the reverse diagnostics and the doubling itself. As a 2025 issue, this variety represents the cutting edge of the Jefferson Nickel DDR census, struck at the Philadelphia Mint in standard copper-nickel composition at 5 grams. The WDDR-014 sequence number indicates that at least 14 doubled die reverses have already been cataloged for the 2025-P nickel, continuing the pattern of prolific variety discovery that has characterized the modern Monticello reverse Jefferson Nickel series since the design's return in 2006.
