Description

On the final year of the original Felix Schlag Monticello reverse before the 2025 redesign took effect, this Class VIII tilted hub doubled die reverse on the 2025 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel shows very nice doubling on the left side of the letters ICELL of MONTICELLO, the large semicircular window, the bottom of column number 4, and on the right edge of the center steps. Class VIII doubling arises from a slight angular tilt between hub and die during hubbing, producing a rotational spread that manifests differently across the design depending on distance from the tilt axis. Discovered by Brian A. Ribar and cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 2025-P WDDR-013, this represents one of the last doubled die varieties to be documented on the long-running Monticello reverse. Obverse die markers include die gouges below the OD of GOD. Reverse diagnostics feature a die gouge between the ON of MONTICELLO, a die gouge above the right porch, and a die gouge below the crossbar of the second T of STATES. Thirteen doubled die reverses for the 2025 date reflects continued active research on current-year coinage.
