Description

Attributed as Wexler Variety ID: 2024-P WDDR-005, this Philadelphia Jefferson Nickel reverse presents close Class VIII tilted hub doubling on E PLURIBUS UNUM, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and FS — Felix Schlag's designer initials that appear on the Monticello reverse. Die markers are numerous and distinct: a die gouge to the left of the I in IN, another to the right of the S in CENTS, a gouge between the TE of UNITED, one to the right of the M in UNUM, and another above the first T of STATES. The involvement of Schlag's initials in the doubling spread is noteworthy because these small letters, positioned near the building's base, provide a fine-scale reference for measuring hub displacement. Class VIII tilted hub doubling follows a gradient pattern across the die face, intensifying in one direction and diminishing in another. As a 2024 issue, this variety demonstrates that even contemporary Mint production — utilizing modern single-squeeze hubbing presses — generates documentable hub doubling. The extensive array of die markers makes WDDR-005 relatively straightforward to authenticate, offering collectors multiple confirmation points beyond the doubling itself.
