2024 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001

Description

Among the most recently documented Jefferson Nickel doubled dies, this 2024 Philadelphia Mint WDDO-001 exhibits Class VIII Tilted Hub doubling visible on Jefferson's right eye — a location that makes the variety particularly striking, as facial features naturally draw the viewer's attention. Class VIII doubling results from the hub being tilted relative to the die face during impression, creating displacement that varies in magnitude across different design areas depending on their distance from the tilt axis. The eye area, with its fine engraved detail, registers this tilt-induced displacement as a subtle but detectable secondary impression. Die markers on both sides aid attribution: the obverse shows a small die gouge to the lower left of the first T of TRUST, while the reverse carries three diagnostics — a die gouge to the left of the upper F in OF, a die scratch across the center door of Monticello, and a die gouge to the left of N in MONTICELLO. The 2024 Jefferson Nickel continues Jamie Franki's updated left-facing portrait introduced in 2022, and WDDO-001 demonstrates that hubbing anomalies persist in modern Mint production despite advances in die-making technology.
