Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 2024-P WDDR-004, this doubled die reverse on the 2024 Philadelphia Jefferson Nickel is classified as Class VIII Tilted Hub Doubling. The doubling shows nicely on E PLURIBUS UNUM, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and FS — the designer's initials for Felix Schlag, positioned at the base of the Monticello building. Obverse die markers include a die gouge between the E of WE and the first T of TRUST. Reverse die markers are particularly abundant: a die gouge between TA of STATES, a die gouge below the lower right crossbar of the E of STATES, and a die gouge above the M of MONTICELLO. Class VIII Tilted Hub Doubling on this die produced visible effects across three separate inscription zones plus the designer's initials, indicating the tilt axis was oriented such that displacement was detectable across a broad arc of the reverse face. The FS initials are an especially sensitive diagnostic target because their small size means even modest hub displacement produces proportionally significant offset. The 2024 Jefferson Nickel is among the most recent issues in the Return to Monticello series (2006 to date), struck at the Philadelphia Mint in copper-nickel composition (75% copper, 25% nickel, 5.000 grams, 21.2 mm). As a very recent issue, WDDR-004 represents an active discovery in contemporary die variety research, with examples potentially available at face value from rolls and bags of current production. The three reverse die gouges across different inscription areas provide a robust multi-point confirmation system for attribution.
