Description

First documented doubled die reverse for the 2023 Bessie Coleman Quarter in the American Women series, this variety shows doubling to the east on Coleman's nose and lips on the reverse portrait. Attributed as Wexler 2023-P 25c BC WDDR-001, the die carries extensive secondary markers. On the obverse, a large pre-die break depression appears on the tip of Washington's nose, with a north-south die crack on the eye and eyebrow extending into the forehead, a large die gouge northeast of the 3 in the date, a die gouge below the first 2 in the date, and die gouges right of L and E in LIBERTY. On the reverse, a large die gouge sits between E and P in E PLURIBUS UNUM, two die gouges appear right of the pinky finger, and a die gouge is positioned below the B in PLURIBUS. The Bessie Coleman design honors the first African American and Native American woman to hold a pilot's license, part of the five-year American Women Quarter program (2022-2025). Struck in clad composition at the Philadelphia Mint.
