The 2022 (S) Proof Wilma Mankiller Quarter is a proof quarter struck at the San Francisco Mint, part of the American Women Quarters (2022 - 2025) series. The San Francisco Mint struck 442,823 clad proof Wilma Mankiller quarters dated 2022. The obverse features George Washington facing right in a new dynamic portrait by Laura Gardin Fraser (modeled in 1931 and first used on a quarter in 2022) and the reverse displays unique designs honoring prominent American women who shaped the nation's history. First woman elected Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation, serving from 1985 to 1995. The reverse portrays Mankiller with the seven-pointed star of the Cherokee Nation. Inaugural year featuring Maya Angelou, Dr. Sally Ride, Wilma Mankiller, Nina Otero-Warren, and Anna May Wong. The new Laura Gardin Fraser obverse debuted, her original 1931 design finally adopted. As a proof issue, this coin was struck multiple times on specially prepared polished planchets using polished dies, producing mirror-like fields and frosted design elements prized by collectors. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, established during the California Gold Rush and now primarily producing proof and collector coins.
