The obverse features George Washington facing right in a new dynamic portrait by Laura Gardin Fraser (modeled in 1931 and first used on a quarter in 2022) and the reverse displays unique designs honoring prominent American women who shaped the nation's history. Celebrated poet, memoirist, and civil rights activist whose works include "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings." The reverse depicts Angelou with arms uplifted, a bird in flight, and a rising sun — imagery drawn from her own writing. Inaugural year featuring Maya Angelou, Dr. Sally Ride, Wilma Mankiller, Nina Otero-Warren, and Anna May Wong. The new Laura Gardin Fraser obverse debuted, her original 1931 design finally adopted. The Denver Mint, which grew from an 1860s gold rush assay office, has served as a major production facility since 1906.
