Description

Identified by James Cassin, this 2022-D Sally Ride Quarter carries the distinction of being a doubled working hub obverse rather than a standard doubled die, meaning the doubling originated at the hub level and potentially affected multiple working dies produced from that hub. Strong doubling appears on the S on the ear and the hair curl above the ear on the obverse portrait. Obverse die markers include a small die gouge at the inner curve of the last 2 in the date. On the reverse, a small die gouge appears above the US in PLURIBUS. Because WWHO-001 is a working hub variety, obverse and reverse die markers will vary among the different working dies that were affected by this hub anomaly, making secondary marker identification specific to each die pair rather than universal across all affected coins. The Sally Ride Quarter, part of the American Women Quarters program, shares the WWHO-001 hub anomaly with the Nina Otero-Warren quarter from the same program year, as both designs received obverse impressions from the same affected working hub.
