Description

The 2021 (S) Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site Quarter was struck at the San Francisco Mint as a quarter in the America the Beautiful Quarters 2010-2021 series. The San Francisco Mint struck 858,572 uncirculated Tuskegee Airmen quarters dated 2021. The obverse features George Washington facing left, based on a 1786 bust by Jean-Antoine Houdon and the reverse displays unique designs featuring national parks and sites from each state and territory. The reverse depicts a Tuskegee Airman pilot suiting up with the Moton Field control tower in the background and P-51 Mustangs overhead, bearing the inscription "They Fought Two Wars." The site honors the nearly 1,000 African American pilots who overcame segregation to become one of the most distinguished fighter groups of World War II. Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site (AL) was the 56th and final coin in the program, honoring the African American WWII fighter pilots who overcame segregation to serve with distinction. Coined at the San Francisco Mint, which transitioned from Gold Rush-era production to its modern role producing proof and collector issues. Estimated market value ranges from $0.25 to $4 depending on grade and condition. Struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel over a pure copper center, weighing 5.67 grams, 24.3 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #862119.
