Description

The 2021 (S) Proof Tuskegee Airmen NP- Silver Quarter is a proof quarter struck at the San Francisco Mint, part of the America the Beautiful Quarters 2010-2021 series. The U.S. Mint produced 490,829 examples, making this ranked 2nd of 9 mint variants by mintage, with less than 1% of production. The obverse features George Washington facing left, based on a 1786 bust by Jean-Antoine Houdon and the reverse displays unique designs featuring national parks and sites from each state and territory. The reverse depicts a Tuskegee Airman pilot suiting up with the Moton Field control tower in the background and P-51 Mustangs overhead, bearing the inscription "They Fought Two Wars." The site honors the nearly 1,000 African American pilots who overcame segregation to become one of the most distinguished fighter groups of World War II. Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site (AL) was the 56th and final coin in the program, honoring the African American WWII fighter pilots who overcame segregation to serve with distinction. As a proof issue, this coin was struck multiple times on specially prepared polished planchets using polished dies, producing mirror-like fields and frosted design elements prized by collectors. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, established during the California Gold Rush and now primarily producing proof and collector coins. Estimated market value ranges from $0 to $27 depending on grade and condition. Struck in 99.9% silver, weighing 6.25 grams, 24.3 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #879229.
