2021 (P) Lincoln Shield Cent - CU-1C-2021-04 Cud

Description

CU-1C-2021-04 is one of the cataloged cuds for the 2021 Philadelphia Lincoln Shield Cent. Multiple cuds from a single year are not unusual for the cent denomination, which is produced in far greater quantities than any other circulating coin — billions of cents are struck annually, requiring thousands of working die pairs. With each die subject to eventual fatigue failure, some percentage will develop rim breaks during their productive lifespan. The "04" suffix distinguishes this particular break from the previously cataloged cuds for 2021 Philadelphia cents, each of which occurred on a different working die and at a different position on the coin. Cuds are identifiable even in heavily circulated condition because their raised, blank profile contrasts sharply with the surrounding design, where subtler varieties like repunched mintmarks or minor doubled dies would be worn beyond recognition.
