2021 (P) Lincoln Shield Cent - CU-1C-2021-02R Cud

Description

On the Union Shield reverse of a 2021 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Cent, this reverse cud preserves a die rim fracture that reveals how the Shield design's geometry influences cud formation. The reverse introduced in 2010 features a large central shield with horizontal and vertical lines, a banner reading ONE CENT, and E PLURIBUS UNUM above — elements that create specific stress distribution patterns across the die face. When the die rim fractures and a piece separates, the resulting cud's appearance is shaped by which design elements the fracture intersects. Reverse cuds on Shield Cents can disrupt the shield border, obliterate portions of the legend, or create featureless masses that contrast sharply with the detailed surrounding design. CU-1C-2021-02R is a reverse cud for the 2021-P date. Cataloged by Cuds on Coins, cud varieties on modern cents offer accessible entry points for error collectors, as the high mintage ensures that surviving examples from affected die pairs circulate widely.
