2021 Variety WWHO-001
ErrorDescription
Submitted by James Wilkins and cataloged by the Wexler Team as 2021 1¢ WWHO-001, this Lincoln Shield Cent is a Doubled Working Hub Obverse variety — a fundamentally different class than a doubled die because a working hub anomaly affects every working die produced from that hub, meaning this doubling pattern can appear on coins struck by multiple different die pairs rather than being unique to a single die. Moderate extra thickness shows on LIBERTY, with the upper right of the Y considerably thicker than the upper left, and notching visible on the lower left corners of the E, R, T, and Y in LIBERTY. The asymmetric thickness on the Y and the selective notching pattern document the specific geometry of the hub displacement that created this variety. Obverse die markers will vary with individual working dies since the doubling exists on the hub itself, not on any single die, while the reverse carries a die crack through the top left of the shield north of PLUR in PLURIBUS on the specific die pair documented. No cross-references to other cataloging systems are currently known. The Lincoln Shield Cent was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 2021 in copper-plated zinc composition (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) weighing 2.5 grams with a 19.05 mm diameter. The Shield reverse was designed by Lyndall Bass, and Victor David Brenner’s obverse Lincoln portrait has served continuously since 1909. The working hub origin means collectors may find the LIBERTY extra thickness on coins with different obverse and reverse die markers than those documented here, as each die made from the affected hub would carry the same doubling but develop its own unique die markers through production use.
