2020 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-006

Description

Displaying moderate extra thickness on the vertical bars of the letters in LIBERTY, the 2020 Lincoln Shield Cent WDDO-006 affects an area of the inscription where the straight vertical strokes of L, I, B, E, R, T, and Y amplify hub displacement into visible broadening along their lengths. The vertical bar structure of these letters acts as a natural gauge for doubling — any lateral displacement thickens the stroke in a way that is more immediately apparent than on curved elements. A distinctive die marker aids attribution: a die gouge manifesting as a raised dot appears to the right of the bottom of the Y in LIBERTY on the obverse. No reverse die markers have been noted. Attributed by the Wexler Team under variety ID 2020 1c WDDO-006, no cross-references to other attribution systems are currently known. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint in copper-plated zinc at 2.5 grams, bearing Victor David Brenner's obverse portrait of Abraham Lincoln paired with Joseph F. Menna's Union Shield reverse. Examine the vertical strokes within LIBERTY under at least 5x magnification for the moderate extra thickness, and confirm the die gouge dot near the lower right of the Y.
