Description
Showing a light southward spread on the 2020 Philadelphia Jefferson Nickel, VDDR-022 was attributed by VarietyVista and manifests as an extra top roof of the central doorway on the Monticello reverse. Even light spread becomes detectable on architectural elements like rooflines because the straight edges of the original design provide a precise baseline against which the displaced secondary image can be measured. VarietyVista documented Stage A in early die state as unconfirmed, Stage B in mid die state with a die chip off the left building edge and the obverse also in mid die state, and Stage C in late die state as unconfirmed. The die chip off the left building edge at Stage B provides a secondary diagnostic for authenticating specimens and determining their position in the die's production sequence. The Monticello reverse's neoclassical facade — with its symmetrical rooflines, columns, and pediment — has generated doubled die and spread varieties throughout the Jefferson nickel series. Collectors should examine the roofline directly above the central doorway to identify the extra image created by this southward spread.
