Description

First cataloged doubled die reverse for the 2020 Jefferson Nickel Return to Monticello series, this variety displays Class VIII tilted hub doubling below the upper portion of the door frame on the center door above the steps of Monticello. Class VIII doubling is caused by a slight angular tilt of the hub during the hubbing process, producing a localized spread that differs from the uniform lateral displacement of Class I varieties. Die markers aid in attribution: the obverse carries a small die dot below and between the D of GOD and the W of WE, while the reverse shows a die gouge to the right of the M of UNUM, a die gouge above the N of CENTS, and a series of die gouges above the F of OF. As WDDR-001 for the 2020 date, this is the primary doubled die reverse variety for the year — the first discovered and typically the most thoroughly documented. The 2020 Jefferson Nickel was among the last issues struck before the redesign of the obverse to a three-quarter facing portrait of Jefferson in 2025. Monticello's architectural details, particularly the columns and door frames, serve as sensitive indicators of die doubling because their fine lines readily reveal even slight positional shifts between hub impressions.
