Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista, the 2020 VDDR-020 is a Philadelphia Jefferson nickel with an unusual counterclockwise (CCW) spread direction, producing an extra top left central door side on Monticello. Counterclockwise spread results from rotational hub misalignment rather than the more common linear east-west or north-south displacement, indicating the hub twisted slightly during the impression process. This rotational component makes VDDR-020 diagnostically distinct from the linear-spread Monticello varieties in the Jefferson nickel series. Confirmed at Early Die State (Stage A), the secondary door-side image should be well-defined on properly preserved specimens. Medium-class counterclockwise spread creates a ghost element that curves subtly away from the primary line rather than running perfectly parallel, a telltale signature of rotational doubling. Rotational doubled dies are less frequently cataloged than linear varieties, making CCW-spread examples noteworthy additions to any Jefferson nickel variety collection.
